whatevervision movie club

a monthly online discussion group

welcome to the inaugural edition of the whatevervision movie club, a monthly watch list and discussion group dedicated to our all-time favorite movies, and the artists who made them possible. at the start of every month we'll be posting a list of 2-3 films to check out, along with a write-up on what you're in for, what it reminded us of, and why we're so obsessed. then, throughout the month we'll have an open discussion of the movies on our forum, along with an analysis video posted to the whatevervision youtube channel.

since this is the first go-round, and we're still building an audience, we're going to leave this month's watchlist up until June. once the video is ready, we'll embed it here, so keep an eye out! and now, without further ado, our first three picks...

SPICE WORLD (1997)

Bob Spiers, dir.

still from Spice World

alright gang, we've got a bold choice off the bat to weed out the normies. if you were a little girl in the late 90s, you remember two things taking your world by storm back then: Pokemon, and the Spice Girls. riding the wave of "Cool Britannia" culture at the turn of the millennium, the Spice Girls quickly built a massive audience, driven by a core fanbase of kids and young girls (including yours truly!). and back in those halcyon days before Hollywood decided to sh*t its pants for no reason and stop making movies, you could bet that if something got super popular, a blockbuster film adaptation was not far behind. the team behind Spice World smartly opted to make this one a candy-colored clone of A Hard Day's Night, with the girls wildly careening from wacky vignette to wacky vignette, punctuated by songs from their new album (and a non-stop parade of celebrity cameos). the group's chemistry is infectious, the songs will take you back, and overall it's a fun, breezy watch (barring a certain cover song...). I can already sense the film bros plugging their noses, but the girls and the gays are in for a treat with this one. crack open a snapple and a bag of bugles, and let it roll.

why we love it: almost two hours of girl power; great supporting ensemble; the music, the outfits, the glam...the Bob Hoskins cameo!

pairs well with: Josie and the Pussycats (2001), Pokemon: the First Movie (1998)

content warning: although the original artist does not appear in the final cut of the film (thankfully), we still recommend skipping past "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)"

THE WATERMELON WOMAN (1996)

Cheryl Dunye, dir.

still from The Watermelon Woman

why we love it:

pairs well with: Double Happiness (1994), Go Fish (1994)

HACKERS (1995)

Iain Softley, dir.

still from Hackers

why we love it:

pairs well with: Star Wars (1997) (trust us!), The Net (1995)
